The ESE/IES exam is conducted for four engineering fields – Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics & Telecommunications. Thousands of engineering graduates write this exam every year to get recruited into the limited posts in different government departments.  ESE/IES is considered one of India’s toughest competitive examinations due to its vast syllabus and the difficulty level of the three-stage exam.

Application Process

The candidates need to apply for the exam through the official website of the Union Public Service Commission. The exam fee is 200 INR for general-category male candidates. Female candidates and reserved-category candidates need not pay any fee. Once the application process is completed, admit cards will be issued one month prior to the prelims exam.

Exam

ESE is a three-level exam with a prelims, a mains and an interview. The preliminary exam has objective questions from General Aptitude (200 marks) and Engineering (300 marks). The main exam follows a descriptive pattern and has two subject papers of 300 marks each. Those who clear the prelims are allowed to write the main exam, and the finalists will face a personal interview. Once the three-stage examination is over, appointments for the vacancies are made by the concerned departments.

Eligibility and Age Limit

The candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a recognised university. Certain M.Sc. specialisations such as Wireless Communications, Electronics and Radio-physics are also considered for some posts. The candidates’ age should not be less than 21, and it should not exceed 30. Further relaxations on the age limit are given to reserved category students and also for general category students under particular conditions.

ESE Preparation Strategy

While preparing for a highly competitive exam such as ESE, it is essential to have an effective preparation strategy. The first step a candidate should do is to understand the syllabus in a detailed manner. This will help the candidate to create a flawless study plan. Another crucial step involved in the preparation is going through the previous years’ question papers. Once these two steps are done, candidates will be able to choose the right course and study materials for the preparation. Unlike the GATE exam, ESE preparation is pretty long, owing to its multiple levels of exams. It can be stressful too. One should keep this in mind before starting the preparation. Despite all the hard work and long study hours, one may still feel low but it is part of this journey. Stay focused on what you will achieve after passing the exam – a secured life. Remember, the fruits of hard work are sweeter.
