For the past few years, the government institutions which have got statuses like Navratna, Maharatna, and Miniratna are filling the posts like Executive Trainee, and Graduate Engineer based on the GATE score. These companies are releasing job advertisements first. It is suggested to apply on the basis of the GATE score along with specific academic qualifications. After that, the respective institutions follow their own self-selection process further. Most PSUs give 75 percent weightage to the GATE score; A maximum of ten percent for group discussion/group tasks to be conducted in the later stages; Fifteen percent weightage is given for personal interviews. Some other PSUs are giving 60 to 65 percent weightage to the GATE score and allowing the remaining amount to GD/PI. The final selection is made based on the score obtained by the candidates for a total of 100 marks.
Group Discussion
In the group discussion, a certain number of candidates are formed into different teams. There are five to ten candidates on each team. Each group is given a topic to talk about. The duration of this group discussion is 20 minutes to 30 minutes. That is, each candidate gets an average of five to six minutes. It is during this time that the candidates have to speak explaining their views on the topic and the current situation.
Group Task
Many PSUs conduct group tasks instead of group discussions. A group task means a specific real problem is placed before the candidates. it states that they have to find a solution to that problem. It contains topics related to the core subject studied by the candidates. Candidates have to form teams to solve this.
Personal Interview
Candidates who succeeded in group discussion/group tasks will have a personal interview at the end. In this, questions are asked to examine the personal background and technical knowledge of the candidates. Project work done in BTech, Mini Projects, Internships, the skills acquired by the respective candidates, and also the solution shown to the problem is tried to be known. Apart from this, whether the candidate has the right attitude for the job is also examined. PSUs specify specific cutoffs for GATE recruitment through PSUs to select candidates for the final process.
