SSC CPO Job Profile and Responsibilities

SSC CPO offers an excellent opportunity to fresh graduates who want to serve in the country’s defence forces. The exam is conducted for the recruitment for a total of 7 positions. Let’s break down the job responsibilities and work profile for each position here:

Delhi Police Sub Inspector

Sub Inspector is one of the most powerful positions in the police department. This position is in charge of maintaining law and order in the capital city of Delhi. This post comes under the wing of the Home Ministry, and the SI derives all power from the Criminal Procedure Code of India.

To maintain law and order in the city, the SI has the right to:

  • Arrest with or without a warrant
  • Search an individual's premises or vehicles
  • Register FIR against a person
  • Disperse unruly mob with/without the use of force
  • Investigate all cases under the Indian Penal Code, as well as any special laws sanctioned by Parliament or state laws

SI in BSF (Border Security Force)

As an SI in BSF, you will be directly deployed to the border area once the training is complete. You will take up responsibilities like:

  • Protecting the border regions of India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh
  • Promoting a sense of security to the people living in the border region
  • Preventing trans-border crimes like illegal entry into and exit from the territory of India, smuggling, and controlling refugees

SI in CISF (Central Industrial Security Force)

The CISF is responsible for airport security at all commercial airports in India. The forces also provide security for the Delhi metro. Some other responsibilities of an SI in CISF include:

  • Providing security to various PSUs and other important infrastructures

SI in CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force)

The duties of an SI in CRPF include:

SI in ITBPF (Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force)

As an SI for ITBPF, your duties include:

  • Protecting the Indo-China border (from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh)

  • Protecting Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders
  • Preventing cross-border crimes such as smuggling and anti-national activities
  • Maintaining peace and security in the region

Assistant Sub-Inspector in CISF (Central Industrial Security Force)

As an Assistant SI in CISF, you will be responsible for the security of all the PSUs and other important government infrastructure units. Other duties include airport security, industrial security, search operations, power of seizure, and clerical tasks.

Besides the salary, SSC CPO employees enjoy various perks and allowances for being Central Government employees. The allowances and benefits differ according to the posts and the posting city.

Here are the allowances awarded to SSC CPO staff:

  • Home Rental Allowance (HRA): House rent allowance is determined by the city class in which you live.
  • Dearness Allowance (DA): This allowance is paid to all government employees and is calculated as a percentage of their base salary. At present, DA is 12% of Basic Pay under the 7th Pay Commission.
  • Travel Allowance (TA): The transport or travel allowance depends on the place of posting.
  • Children’s Education Allowance: You’ll receive Rs. 2250 per month for children studying from nursery to class 12. Students staying in a hostel will get a hostel subsidy of Rs. 6750.
  • Diet allowance: Diet Allowance or ration money is given to CPO employees to help them meet their dietary needs. SIs in the Police receive a dietary allowance of Rs. 101.5, and CISF SIs are entitled to Rs. 97.85 per head per day in ration money.
  • Risk Allowance: SIs working in remote and dangerous regions get complete risk allowance for protection against possible mishaps.

Besides the allowance, you’ll be entitled to enjoy the benefits of the National Pension Scheme (NPS), Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), and Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme (CGEGIS).

Career Growth and Promotions

There’s a high scope for career progression in the defense and security sector. But you have to understand that there exists an order of promotion, and your years of service are considered for promotion.

If you crack the SSC CPO exam, you can be selected as an SI in the Delhi Police force. Getting promoted to the next post as an Inspector usually takes 15-18 years, and another 12-15 years to get the next promotion to the position of ACP. The promotion will depend on the career record, work performance, and behavioral conduct while on duty.

The promotion criteria for CAPF are similar to BSF. You will have to clear departmental examinations to get a promotion.

In CISF, the promotion of Assistant Sub Inspector to the rank of Sub Inspector will likely happen after five years of continuous service. Since promotions in CISF depend on the Zonal Security level, you will have to wait for 7-8 years for the first promotion.
